Understanding Neck Pain and Its Causes

Neck pain and its related problems can become incapacitating for sufferers. Millions of people will experience neck pain at some point in their life.

The head is heavy and balanced on a narrow support made up of seven bones called vertebrae. The vertebrae are separated from each other by discs, stabilised by joints and ligaments and moved by muscles. Because the neck is so mobile, it is easily damaged.

Injury and postural problems are the most common causes of neck pain. Diseases such as arthritis or degeneration of the discs can also cause pain.

Some other causes of neck pain include:

  • Trauma or injury
  • Worry and stress
  • Falling asleep in an awkward position
  • Prolonged use of a computer keyboard
  • Poor posture

Common Symptoms Associated with Neck Pain

While a stiff or sore neck is the most obvious symptom, neck problems can also cause a range of other issues. It’s important to pay attention to these related symptoms, as they can indicate the root cause of your pain.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp or Stabbing Pain: Often localised to one spot on the neck.
  • Dull Aches: A general soreness or tenderness in the neck region.
  • Headaches: Tension in the neck muscles is a very common cause of tension headaches and can even trigger migraines.
  • Reduced Range of Motion: Difficulty turning your head from side to side or looking up and down.
  • Pain Radiating to Shoulders and Arms: This can present as numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arm or hand, and may indicate that a nerve is being compressed in your neck.

What is "Tech Neck" and How Can You Avoid It?

One of the most common causes of neck pain today is ‘Tech Neck.’ This is the stress and strain placed on the neck by looking down at phones, tablets, and computers for extended periods. When you tilt your head forward, you dramatically increase the weight and pressure on the vertebrae and muscles in your neck.

Over time, this poor posture can lead to:

  • Chronic neck pain and stiffness
  • Upper back and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • Increased curvature of the spine

To avoid tech neck, try to hold your devices at eye level, take frequent breaks from your screen, and gently stretch your neck muscles throughout the day.

How Chiropractic Care Can Relieve Neck Pain

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to treat the underlying cause of neck pain, rather than just masking the symptoms. Our approach focuses on restoring proper motion and alignment to the spine.

Our chiropractors may use a combination of techniques, including:

  • Spinal Adjustments: Gentle, specific adjustments to the vertebrae in the neck and upper back to restore proper movement and relieve pressure on nerves.
  • Muscle Release Techniques: To alleviate tension and tightness in the muscles of the neck and shoulders.
  • Postural Advice and Exercises: We will provide guidance on improving your posture and prescribe specific exercises to strengthen your neck muscles and prevent future problems.

Tips for Preventing Neck Pain

You can take proactive steps to protect your neck and minimise your risk of pain.

  • Be Mindful of Your Posture: Whether sitting or standing, keep your head balanced directly over your spine.
  • Optimise Your Workspace: Adjust your chair, computer monitor, and keyboard so your screen is at eye level and you can sit with your back supported.
  • Sleep Smart: Use a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck. Sleeping on your back or side is generally better for your neck than sleeping on your stomach.
  • Take Regular Breaks: Avoid staying in the same position for too long. Get up, move around, and stretch every 30-60 minutes.
